Core Aeration & Overseeding

The single most impactful thing you can do for a compacted Vancouver Island lawn. Break up the soil, let it breathe, and fill it in thick.

Why Your Lawn Needs Core Aeration

If you've ever noticed water pooling on your lawn, grass that seems thin no matter what you do, or moss creeping into areas that should be grass — you're almost certainly dealing with compacted soil. It's one of the most common lawn problems on Vancouver Island, and core aeration is the solution.

Our heavy clay soils, combined with our wet winters and foot traffic, create a dense, compacted layer that roots struggle to penetrate. Core aeration uses a commercial-grade machine to pull thousands of small soil plugs from your lawn, creating channels for air, water, and nutrients to reach the root zone.

How Core Aeration Works

1

Extract Cores

Our machine pulls 2-3 inch soil plugs across your entire lawn, spaced every few inches.

2

Overseed

Premium grass seed is spread over the aerated lawn, settling into the holes for direct soil contact.

3

Watch It Thicken

Within weeks, new grass fills in bare spots while existing grass grows stronger with better root access.

Benefits of Aeration & Overseeding

  • Relieves soil compaction and improves drainage — critical for our clay-heavy island soils
  • Allows air, water, and nutrients to reach the root zone where they do the most good
  • Overseeding fills thin areas and bare patches for a thicker, more uniform lawn
  • Reduces thatch buildup that harbors disease and insects
  • Creates a thicker lawn that naturally crowds out weeds and moss

Part of the 7-Step Program

Core aeration and overseeding are Steps 5 and 6 in our 7-Step Lawn Care Program. When combined with proper fertilization, weed control, and surfactant treatments, the results compound — each step makes the others more effective.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time to aerate a lawn on Vancouver Island?

Early fall (September to mid-October) is the ideal time. The soil is still warm, there's usually rain on the way, and grass seed germinates quickly. Spring aeration (March-April) is also effective.

How often should I aerate my lawn?

Most Vancouver Island lawns benefit from annual aeration. Heavily compacted lawns or those with clay-heavy soil may benefit from twice yearly — once in spring and once in fall.

What's the difference between core aeration and spike aeration?

Core aeration removes actual plugs of soil, creating space for air, water, and nutrients to reach roots. Spike aeration just pokes holes and can actually increase compaction around each hole. We only use core aeration for real results.

Should I overseed at the same time as aeration?

Absolutely. Aeration creates the perfect seedbed — the cores leave holes where seed can settle and make direct contact with soil. It's the most effective way to overseed an existing lawn.

How long before I see results from overseeding?

New grass seed typically germinates within 7-14 days in fall conditions. You'll start to see noticeable thickening within 3-4 weeks, with full results showing the following spring.
